Philadelphia has unveiled a circular video “Portal” at JFK Plaza, which livestreams 24/7 to other countries. The portal was initially installed in New York City and streams to Dublin, Ireland, Vilnius, Lithuania, and Lublin, Poland. Another portal is set to launch in Piaui, Brazil. The portal will be at Love Park until November 7 before moving to a different location in the city. The screen initially had a crack, but officials assure it will be fixed soon.
The concept for the Portals was created by artist Benediktas Gylys to connect the world through livestream installations. More portals are expected in countries like Brazil and Ethiopia. Gylys emphasizes that Portals are sculptures forming a global network to bridge a united planet. The project aims to transcend physical barriers through art.
The Portals have been well received and are seen as an unprecedented opportunity for people to engage with different countries. The crack on the screen will be fixed, ensuring that the portal continues to connect people around the world. The Portals project is seen as a powerful demonstration of art’s ability to bring people together regardless of physical distance.
