The latest crime trend report from the Englewood Police Department reveals a decrease in overall crimes against people and property in 2023 compared to 2022. However, there has been a significant increase in “crimes against society,” which includes offenses related to drugs, weapons, prostitution, and animal abuse. While total crime decreased by 11.14%, crimes against society saw an 88.81% increase, with drug offenses being the majority reported. Drug arrests spiked by 116% in 2023, with a hotspot identified off Hampden Avenue in Englewood.
Businesses in the area have reported daily issues with drug use and overdoses outside their establishments, prompting some to keep Narcan behind the counter. Long-time business owners like Frank Makray have expressed concern about the changing environment in Englewood, noting the prevalence of drug paraphernalia in public areas.
The Englewood Police Department attributes the increase in crimes against society to their intensified efforts in proactive policing, particularly in targeting drug offenses. They emphasize their commitment to community safety and visibility in hotspots, with the hope of bringing crime numbers down in the future. While preliminary statistics for 2024 are not yet available, the department continues to focus on addressing the rise in crimes against society.
