Connecticut firefighter Robert Sharkevich Sr. tragically lost his life in a utility task vehicle crash while responding to a brush fire on Lamentation Mountain in Berlin, Connecticut. Three other firefighters were injured in the accident. Sharkevich was a veteran firefighter who worked with the Hartford Fire Department before retiring and volunteering with the Wethersfield Volunteer Fire Department. The community held a processional in his honor, and Governor Ned Lamont directed flags to be lowered to half-staff.
The Lamentation Mountain brush fire has spread over 100 acres, with resources from various departments working to contain it. No homes have been damaged so far, and firefighters are setting backfires to control the flames. Residents are urged to avoid campfires and be cautious with cigarette disposal.
