Questioning the Kilyn Lewis Shooting: Aurora Police Watchdog Report

In Aurora, Colorado, questions surrounding the death of Kilyn Lewis, an unarmed Black man shot by a police officer, continue to be raised by the city’s independent consent decree monitor. Footage shows Lewis with his hands up when SWAT officer Michael Dieck fired the fatal shot outside an apartment complex on May 23. Despite being a suspect in a first-degree attempted murder case, Lewis was unarmed at the time of the shooting. His father, Robert, expressed his belief that his son did not deserve to die in such a manner during a rally outside the Aurora Municipal Center.

The independent consent decree monitor was put in place after the death of Elijah McClain with the aim of improving the use of force by Aurora police officers and reducing racially biased policing. IntegrAssure, a Florida-based firm specializing in overseeing police departments, was hired to fulfill this role.

The incident has reignited discussions around police use of force and racial bias in law enforcement. The community is calling for justice and accountability in the wake of yet another tragic shooting involving an unarmed Black man. The case of Kilyn Lewis adds to the ongoing national conversation about police reform and the need for systemic change to address issues of racial injustice and police brutality. The story is being closely followed by local media outlets, including The Denver Post, as the community seeks answers and justice for Kilyn Lewis.
