Criticism of Proposition 127 by Colorado Parks and Wildlife employee association

A group of employees of Colorado Parks and Wildlife, known as the Colorado Wildlife Employees Protective Association, has spoken out against Proposition 127, a measure that would ban the hunting of mountain lions, bobcats, and lynx. The association, which represents around 200 agency wildlife professionals, believes that decisions about wildlife should be left to the agency’s science-based professionals. The association’s president, Casey Westbrook, emphasized the importance of following research and proven wildlife management strategies to protect Colorado’s wildlife for future generations. While the association’s resolution and release do not directly mention Proposition 127, Westbrook stated in an interview that the measure prompted the need for the resolution.

The group’s stance on the ballot initiative comes at a time when Colorado Parks and Wildlife is prohibited from taking a stance on such initiatives. The association’s members, which include wildlife officers, biologists, technicians, and other staff, have devoted their careers to wildlife management based on science. The resolution emphasizes the importance of leaving wildlife management decisions in the hands of professionals who have dedicated their careers to this field.
