Former state Rep. Paul Schauer of Littleton passed away on Oct. 18 at the age of 80. Schauer, who served in the state House for 20 years, was known for his focus on financial and tax issues, including public highway and mass transit funding. He also sponsored the School Finance Act for many years. Colleagues remembered him as a dedicated legislator who worked diligently for the benefit of the state, with former Speaker Chuck Berry praising his outstanding contributions.
Schauer’s son Tim recalled his father’s commitment to public service and his high expectations for his children. Despite differing political views, the family engaged in lively discussions, reflecting Schauer’s belief in listening to others and working together. Schauer’s career spanned from his time in the House to a term as a University of Colorado Board of Regents member, where he continued to advocate for higher education.
Born in DeKalb, Illinois, Schauer attended Doan College on a track scholarship before beginning a career at Gates Rubber. He later became executive director of the Colorado Rock Products Association. Described as affable and hard-working, Schauer was respected for his ability to collaborate across party lines and prioritize the needs of the community.
In addition to his wife Cyndy, Schauer is survived by his adult children, grandchildren, and siblings. The family has requested donations to the Alzheimer and Cognition Center Fund at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in lieu of flowers. A memorial service is planned for the spring of 2025. Paul Schauer’s legacy as a dedicated public servant and advocate for higher education will be remembered by those who knew him.
