The Adams 12 Five Star School District is seeking voter approval for an $830 million bond, with a large portion allocated towards building a new Thornton High School to replace the existing 50-year-old building. Principal Charles Arrellano highlighted the need for updated facilities to support innovative learning styles and career-focused programs. The new school would feature open floor plans and hands-on activities in areas such as business, marketing, manufacturing, and culinary arts. Although current students may not benefit directly from the new building, they are excited about the possibilities it offers for future generations.
The construction is expected to take several years, with the new high school opening in 2029 and the first graduating class in 2030. The bond will not raise taxes for the Adams 12 community, and the district is also asking voters to approve a $34.5 million mill levy override for education programs and teacher salaries, which would increase property taxes by about $20 per month on a home valued at $500,000. The district’s goal is to provide modern and functional facilities that support academic excellence and prepare students for success in the workforce.
