Valdamar Archuleta, a Republican candidate running against U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette to represent Denver in Congress, is focusing his campaign on reducing the cost of living for residents. Archuleta, a massage therapist and first-time candidate, emphasizes cutting government spending and finding ways to make the U.S. dollar stretch further for consumers to address the high cost of housing in Denver.
On the other hand, DeGette, a Democrat who has been in office since 1997, is running for her 15th term in Congress. She is centering her reelection campaign on improving federal health care laws, enhancing environmental protections, protecting abortion rights, and combating climate change.
Archuleta’s platform includes securing the southern border, reforming the U.S. government to decrease federal authority, and endorsing a constitutional amendment for a balanced federal budget. He also wants to explore ways the federal government can help reduce housing costs and incentivize the construction of starter homes.
DeGette, on the other hand, is focused on updating federal health care laws, including the Affordable Care Act, and fostering innovative treatments for diseases. She is also committed to reducing carbon emissions to achieve a net-zero target by 2050.
The two candidates differ on immigration policies, with Archuleta advocating for stricter enforcement of border laws, while DeGette favors more resources for border officials to allow for pre-processing of migrants seeking asylum.
Both candidates offer distinct visions for Denver residents, from cost-of-living concerns to health care, environmental protections, and immigration policies. Voters will have the opportunity to choose between these contrasting platforms in the upcoming election.
