Nighttime Blockades Installed to Prevent Crime on Lookout Mountain Road, West of Denver

Road closure gates are being installed on Lookout Mountain to address ongoing trouble in the area. Residents have reported incidents of trash, dead bodies, discharging firearms, drinking, and drug use at night. The closures are set to begin on Nov. 11, with gates at Chimney Gulch Trailhead and Lookout Mountain Park. The gates will be closed from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. in the winter and open an hour before sunrise through mid-March to October. Emergency responders and antenna servicing workers will still have access. Concerns have been raised about enforcement and alternative party locations. First responders will have remote access to the gates, and signage will be added to inform the public of closure hours. In the event of a fire evacuation, Lookout Mountain Road is not recommended due to its limitations. Plans are in place to open the road at night for emergencies, with staff present to manage traffic. Despite some skepticism, residents are willing to adapt to the changes.Overall, the road closures aim to address safety concerns and minimize nighttime activities that have been problematic for the community.
