In a forthcoming biography titled “The Price of Power,” Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell was recorded privately calling former President Donald Trump “stupid,” “despicable,” and a “narcissist” after the 2020 election. McConnell expressed frustration with Trump’s behavior and claimed that his efforts to overturn the election results harmed Republicans in Georgia. McConnell also criticized Trump for withholding coronavirus relief aid from the American people. Following the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, McConnell condemned Trump’s role in provoking the events, but ultimately voted to acquit him in the Senate impeachment trial. Despite their rocky relationship, McConnell has since endorsed Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, emphasizing that they are now on the same team. McConnell’s sentiments about Trump in the biography are some of his strongest yet, showing a departure from his public support of the former president during his presidency. The book is set to be released on Oct. 29, just before the 2022 midterm elections.
