The Downtown Denver Partnership, representing over 700 businesses, supports the sales tax rate increases on Denver’s Nov. 5 ballot. The measures will raise the city sales tax rate by 0.84 points. The group also supports a Denver Public Schools bond, city revitalization bond, and RTD exemption from TABOR limitations. However, they oppose the slaughterhouse and fur ban measures, citing potential negative impacts on the local economy. The fur ban could affect the National Western Stock Show and downtown retailers, while the slaughterhouse ban targets the only slaughterhouse in Denver, Superior Farms. The group believes banning entire industries via ballot measures is not the solution. They support both sales tax measures to fund Denver Health and affordable housing, seeing them as beneficial for the community. The affordable housing measure introduced by Mayor Mike Johnston would cost residents five cents on a $10 purchase and sunset after 40 years. The Partnership’s positions on Denver’s ballot items are detailed on their website. Overall, they aim to support measures that benefit the city’s economic competitiveness and oppose those that could harm vital industries and economic generators.
