Three-term U.S. Rep. Joe Neguse is facing a challenge for his seat in the House of Representatives from Longmont-based tech worker Marshall Dawson. Neguse, who has been in office since 2018 and is currently the assistant Democratic leader in the House, is focusing on policies to grow the middle class, address climate change, protect public lands, and reduce gun violence if reelected.
Dawson, Neguse’s Republican challenger, lost to him in the 2022 election but is running again, pledging to limit the federal government’s power. Other candidates on the ballot include Cynthia Munhos de Aquino Sirianni, Jan Kok, and Gaylon Kent. The 2nd District, where the election is taking place, covers north-central Colorado and includes Boulder, Fort Collins, Vail, Steamboat Springs, Summit County, and ranching communities in Grand, Jackson, and Routt counties.
Neguse has focused on issues such as wildfires, public lands, and water, co-founding the Colorado River caucus and the wildfire caucus. He has also introduced bills to restore watersheds after wildfires and supports initiatives to expand tax credits for the middle class, increase the federal minimum wage, and protect abortion rights.
Dawson has emphasized reducing regulation and federal bureaucracy in his campaign, citing issues of affordability and national crime. He also prioritizes representation for underrepresented communities such as those in Gilpin, Clear Creek, and the Western Slope.
Overall, the race between Neguse and Dawson highlights differing priorities and approaches to addressing key issues facing the district.
