Copper thieves cause over $100,000 in damage to RTD light rail lines

A series of copper wire thefts have been causing disruptions to RTD light rail services, resulting in over $100,000 in damages. The thefts have been ongoing since April, with RTD police responding to 21 instances of theft across its rail lines. The stolen copper wire powers signals at rail crossings and the high-voltage circuits that power light rail trains’ overhead wires. Each theft results in service disruptions until the wire can be replaced and repairs completed. To deter thieves, RTD has taken precautions such as embedding the copper wires in railroad ties, installing wooden covers, and greasing the wires.

Copper theft has become a growing issue for transit agencies in the U.S. and Canada due to the demand for the metal. RTD has made one arrest so far but believes multiple people are involved in the thefts. The agency is urging the public to report any suspicious activity around light rail signals or tracks to RTD police.

The agency is working to prevent further disruptions to light rail services by increasing security measures and is calling for the community’s assistance in identifying the perpetrators. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact RTD police at 303-299-2911 or by texting information to 303-434-9100. With continued cooperation and vigilance, RTD hopes to put an end to the copper thefts and ensure smooth operations for its light rail services.
