The U.S. Highway 50 Middle bridge over Blue Mesa Reservoir is set to reopen to all vehicles on Wednesday, operating as a single-lane with pilot cars. After being closed in April due to numerous flaws, including cracks, over 100 steel plates have been installed for reinforcement. Large vehicles will be escorted one at a time across the bridge until final construction is completed. Repair work will continue overnight, and late-night drivers can expect longer wait times. The U.S. Highway 50 Lake Fork Bridge remains open to all legal loads with flaggers directing traffic. Night work will continue as weather permits, with final restoration work scheduled for next spring. CDOT and Kiewit are hosting a virtual public meeting on Monday, Oct. 14, to discuss updates and answer questions. Spanish interpretation will be available. For additional information on the project, including email updates and resources, visit the Gunnison County website. The mid-October reopening of the Middle bridge marks a significant milestone in restoring normal travel along U.S. Highway 50 between Gunnison and Montrose.
