Troubled Aurora intersection set to close another retail store

The Walgreens store at Havana Street and E. Colfax Avenue in Aurora, Colorado, is set to close next month, following the closure of the Walmart Neighborhood Market at the same intersection in June. The closure has been attributed to “increased regulatory and reimbursement pressures” by the company, but some believe that shoplifting may be a contributing factor.

Aurora City Councilman Steve Sundberg pointed to ongoing issues with shoplifting in the area, which has negatively impacted businesses like Walgreens and Walmart. Despite efforts by the Aurora police to address crime in the area, including violent crime, prostitution, trespassing, and drug use, the closure of these retail stores raises concerns about the overall community impact.

Sundberg highlighted the need for a well-staffed police force and collaboration with businesses to deter criminal activity. He expressed disappointment that initiatives to address crime have not been effective in preventing business closures and proposed measures to avoid a domino effect of store closures at the troubled intersection.

The closure of the Walgreens store will leave many customers inconvenienced, prompting them to find a new pharmacy to fulfill their healthcare needs. The situation underscores the challenges faced by businesses in areas plagued by crime and theft.
