The Regional Transportation District’s Free MallRide has made its return to a portion of the 16th Street Mall in Denver after being rerouted for two-and-a-half years due to construction. The service, which runs every five minutes between Union Station and Curtis Station, offers a convenient and free mode of transportation for residents and visitors alike.
The Free MallRide stops at every intersection along its 1.2-mile route, providing easy access to key points in downtown Denver. With a fleet of 36 battery electric buses, each equipped with three doors, 18 seats, and two wheelchair spaces, the service can accommodate up to 88 passengers. In 2023, the Free MallRide saw 1.7 million boardings, highlighting its importance in helping people navigate the city.
According to Stuart Summers, Chief Communication and Engagement Officer for RTD, the Free MallRide is a vital connection through downtown Denver, servicing both tourists and local residents in the Central Business District. The ongoing 16th Mall Project, expected to be completed in 2025, will further enhance the Free MallRide service once finished.
As the Free MallRide resumes its full operation, it continues to play a crucial role in facilitating transportation in Denver and contributing to the overall accessibility of the city for all.
