Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned that Russia’s deepening alliance with North Korea poses a significant threat to Ukraine and its allies. Zelenskyy accused North Korea of not only sending weapons but also soldiers to help Russia in its war against Ukraine. He urged Ukraine’s allies to provide increased military support to prevent a larger war and allow the country to use longer-range missiles to target military sites in Russia.
Despite Zelenskyy’s pleas, approval for increased military capabilities has not yet been granted. However, he remains committed to securing such support to achieve true peace through strength. Western leaders are expected to discuss the situation in Ukraine this week, with the US President Joe Biden planning to attend the meeting in Germany.
The South Korean Minister of National Defense also expressed concerns about North Korea’s involvement in the conflict, stating that there was a “high possibility” of North Korean soldiers assisting Russia in Ukraine. North Korea’s ties with Russia have deepened since the invasion began in 2022, with Kim Jong Un showing his support during a visit to Russia in 2023.
The US, South Korea, and Ukraine have all accused North Korea of supplying weapons to Russia, with evidence suggesting North Korean missile debris was used in an attack in Ukraine. Despite Russia dismissing such claims as “fake news,” the alliance between North Korea and Russia raises further concerns about the conflict’s escalation. Ukraine continues to urge its allies to strengthen their support in response to Russia’s evolving alliances.
