Stephan Wagner, a semi-retired businessman, has been charged with attempting to murder his wife by lacing her tea with ant poison. The 61-year-old from St Andrews, Sydney, was arrested and had a bottle of Ant-Rid seized from his home. Wagner faces charges of domestic violence, including causing poison to be taken with intent to murder, using poison to endanger life, and using poison to inflict grievous bodily harm. Court documents allege that he had been poisoning his wife from December 2022 to September 2024. Wagner appeared briefly in court via video-link and did not apply for bail. The matter has been adjourned until December 4, with an apprehended violence order prohibiting him from contacting his wife. She was treated in hospital after the alleged poisoning. The bottle of insecticide has been sent for forensic testing. Wagner, who is described as semi-retired and previously worked as a regional manager at the federal Department of Industry, Science and Resources, had also been a lecturer at Western Sydney University. Authorities established strike force southport in September to investigate the alleged poisoning incident. Emily Wind contributed to reporting on this case.
