US elections 2024: Harris visits hurricane-hit Georgia as Vance holds first rally post-debate

Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are set to visit communities in Florida and Georgia that have been hit by Hurricane Helene. Biden will also be visiting North and South Carolina to survey the damage caused by the storm. More than $10 million has been provided to those affected by the storm.

In the aftermath of the storm, the death toll is nearing 180 people, making Helene one of the deadliest storms in recent US history. Biden has ordered the deployment of up to 1,000 active-duty soldiers to reinforce the North Carolina National Guard to help with relief efforts.

Meanwhile, JD Vance and Tim Walz, following their civil vice-presidential debate, are returning to the campaign trail. Vance, in Auburn Hills, Michigan, mocked Walz for his gaffe during the debate. Walz will be speaking with local Latino leaders in Reading, Pennsylvania.

The cybersecurity agency head, Jen Easterly, has stated that security for America’s election systems is robust, with no foreign adversaries like Russia or Iran being able to alter the outcome of the presidential race.

Biden has also approved a major disaster declaration for Virginia, providing federal aid to those affected by Helene in certain parts of the state. The White House is continuing to monitor the situation closely.
