South Korea showcased its powerful Hyunmoo-5 ballistic missile at an annual military parade, demonstrating its readiness to respond to North Korean threats. President Yoon Suk-yeol emphasized that any use of nuclear weapons by North Korea would be met with a strong military response. The parade, featuring 5,300 troops and 340 types of military equipment, highlighted South Korea’s commitment to peace through strength and cooperation with allies like the United States and Japan.
The Hyunmoo-5 missile, capable of carrying an 8-tonne warhead and penetrating deep into the earth, is a key component of South Korea’s defense strategy to deter North Korean aggression. The missile’s successful testing last year earned it the nickname “monster missile” in the media. It is part of the country’s “three-axis” defense system designed to counter North Korea’s nuclear provocations.
Ahead of the parade, North Korea’s vice defense minister criticized the US for its military presence in South Korea, including the flypast of a B-1B bomber and the deployment of a nuclear-powered submarine. North Korea has been defying international sanctions by conducting regular weapons test launches and recently showcased its uranium enrichment facility.
The military parade in South Korea signaled the country’s commitment to maintaining a strong defense posture in the face of North Korean threats. With the Hyunmoo-5 missile as a centerpiece, South Korea demonstrated its preparedness to defend itself and its allies against any potential aggression from North Korea.
