Adams County Woman Finds Safety After Ex-Boyfriend Receives 30-Year Sentence for Assault
In a groundbreaking case of domestic violence, Tomas Bandera, 39, was sentenced to 30 years in prison for assaulting his pregnant ex-girlfriend. The survivor, who wished to remain anonymous, shared her story in hopes of helping others trapped in similar situations. The abuse began as name-calling and escalated to physical violence over a 10-year relationship. Despite ending the relationship in 2022 and obtaining a no-contact order, Bandera continued to stalk the survivor.
The attack occurred in May 2023 when Bandera assaulted the survivor in her home, resulting in severe injuries, including a broken nose and hand, and cuts from a box cutter. The survivor managed to call for help, and Bandera was arrested. The survivor, pregnant at the time, survived the attack, and her baby was born healthy despite being premature. Bandera was sentenced to 30 years in prison, bringing a sense of safety to the survivor.
District Attorney Brian Mason praised the survivor for her courage and resilience. He is working to establish a Family Justice Center in the district to provide comprehensive support for domestic violence victims and survivors. Despite the challenges of prosecuting domestic violence cases, Mason believes in the importance of creating a safe space for victims to access resources and escape abusive relationships.
