Arapahoe County hosts annual event to engage voters with disabilities
Arapahoe County is making efforts to increase voter participation among individuals with disabilities this election season. The county is hosting its annual event, “Ballot Bingo,” in collaboration with Denver nonprofit Developmental Pathways to assist eligible voters who need special accommodations in the voting process.
The event, taking place at the Brewability Lab brewery in Englewood, will provide attendees with technology and assistance for voting, including audio, high-contrast, and large-print ballots for visually impaired voters, as well as “sip and puff” adapters for individuals with mobility impairments.
This initiative is part of Arapahoe County’s ongoing efforts to educate the public on accessible voting options and Developmental Pathways’ mission since 2020 to increase voter engagement among individuals with disabilities.
Research has shown that people with disabilities tend to vote less frequently than those without disabilities, emphasizing the importance of ensuring equal access to the voting process for all individuals. Developmental Pathways’ spokesperson, Kim Tenure, stressed the importance of all voters recognizing their power and the impact of their voices.
In the upcoming November elections, Arapahoe County voters will have the opportunity to choose candidates for Board of County Commissioner seats and vote on a measure regarding the release of the county from certain revenue and spending limits imposed by the Taxpayers’ Bill of Rights (TABOR), known as “de-Brucing.” This event aims to empower voters with disabilities to be informed and engaged participants in the democratic process.
