Dashboard Provides Detailed Information on Serious and Fatal Boulder Crashes

Boulder Police Department in Colorado has launched a new traffic dashboard with the goal of increasing transparency surrounding serious and fatal crashes. This dashboard, a joint effort between the Boulder Innovation & Technology Department and Boulder police, provides detailed information on crashes, including location, driver types, weather conditions, charges filed, and case status.

So far in 2024, there have been 21 crashes recorded on the dashboard, with 12 involving bicyclists or pedestrians. The department plans to add another 17 crashes with expanded parameters. Deputy Chief Barry Hartkopp emphasized the importance of understanding the causes of crashes to prevent future incidents, aligning with the city’s Vision Zero plan aiming for zero fatalities.

Pedestrian Safety Month highlights the need for increased awareness at intersections, where Boulder police have identified as problematic areas. They urge both pedestrians and drivers to pay attention while navigating these spaces.

Last year, Boulder reported 940 bike or pedestrian crashes, indicating a significant need for enhanced safety measures. The new dashboard will serve as a valuable tool for the community to stay informed about traffic incidents and work towards improving road safety in Boulder.
