After over a decade as a staple on Colfax Avenue in Denver, Steve’s Snappin’ Dogs will be closing its doors on October 19. The decision comes as owner Steve Ballas prioritizes spending more time with his wife Linda, who is battling cancer. The restaurant has been a beloved spot for hot dog lovers and has played a key role in revitalizing the Colfax area.
Steve Ballas, a cancer survivor himself, opened the restaurant in 2006 after seeing potential in a rundown gas station. The authentic hot dogs made with a mixture of pork and beef in natural casings quickly gained a cult following. The walls of the restaurant are covered with photos of families and memories shared over delicious hot dogs.
Despite early challenges with crime and safety in the area, Steve’s Snappin’ Dogs has become a cherished neighborhood spot. The restaurant has a connection to Denver TV personality Blinky the Clown, adding to its iconic status in the community. Steve and Linda Ballas have decided to sell the restaurant to a couple who plan to open a barbecue place while still offering Steve’s famous hot dogs.
As the restaurant prepares to close its Colfax location, there are plans to keep a small shop at Denver International Airport. Steve Ballas expressed gratitude to his staff and customers for their support over the years, stating that he is happy to have brought joy to so many people through his hot dog establishment.
