New York City Mayor Eric Adams surrendered to federal authorities after being indicted on five corruption charges related to allegedly taking bribes and campaign contributions from foreigners. Adams, who has denied wrongdoing, is set to appear in court to enter a plea. The indictment includes charges of wire fraud, bribery, and solicitation of campaign contributions from foreign nationals. Prosecutors allege that Turkish diplomats and businesspeople funneled money to Adams’ campaign and provided him with luxury travel perks in exchange for favorable treatment. The scheme dates back to 2014 when Adams was Brooklyn borough president, and continued through his 2021 mayoral campaign. Adams is the first of the city’s mayors to be charged with a federal crime while in office. The scandal has also led to the resignation of New York Police Commissioner Eric Caban and Adams’ top legal adviser, Lisa Zornberg. Despite the charges, Adams has stated that he will continue to do his job as mayor and fight the allegations in court. The indictment highlights the alleged corrupt relationships between Adams and his foreign-national benefactors, who sought to gain influence and benefits in exchange for their illicit contributions.
