Man endured excruciating pain during final moments due to inadequate care at Colorado jail

A lawsuit has been filed on behalf of the family of Avery James Borkovec, a 22-year-old who died at the Boulder County Jail after being denied proper care for staph bacteremia. Borkovec had staph bacteremia, endocarditis, and sepsis, all easily treatable conditions, but was never provided appropriate care, leading to a painful and preventable death. The lawsuit names multiple defendants, including medical staff, the City and County of Broomfield, and the Boulder County Jail. Despite clear signs of infection, including an elevated white blood count and ongoing symptoms, medical staff failed to properly diagnose and treat Borkovec, even dismissing his condition as not serious. Borkovec’s deteriorating health went unnoticed by jail staff, and he suffered for weeks without adequate medical intervention. Eventually, Borkovec collapsed and began vomiting blood, and despite efforts to save him, he tragically passed away. An autopsy revealed his body was ravaged by the infection, and staff at the jail had only measured his vital signs three times during his 26-day stay. The lawsuit also highlights a pattern of inadequate medical care by Turn Key employees in jails, leading to multiple inmate deaths and legal actions. Attorneys representing Borkovec’s family express outrage at the appalling neglect that led to his unnecessary death and call for accountability for those responsible.
