In Denver, young people are harnessing the power of technology to connect with vital resources through the new app called Power of One. Developed by the Youth Violence Prevention Center-Denver in collaboration with community agencies and local students known as the Game Changers, this app aims to provide a platform for youth to connect themselves and their peers to various community services in northeast Denver.
Unlike the state’s Safe2Tell app, which routes tips to law enforcement, the Power of One app directs non-emergency reports to peer navigators who then connect students to the appropriate resources for issues like food insecurity, bullying, and mental health support. The app was designed to address the common concerns faced by students, such as suicide, bullying, and school safety, with a focus on prevention and early intervention.
The creators of the app, like Kaliah Yizar and Keshon Nunn, who provided feedback during its development, emphasize the importance of providing a safe space for youth to seek help and support without fear. They believe that the app can serve as a lifeline for struggling youth by connecting them to resources and opportunities in their community.
Moving forward, the goal is to promote the app in northeast Denver schools and community organizations while also laying the groundwork for a potential national expansion. The hope is that the Power of One app will serve as a safeguard for youth, guiding them towards a brighter future and away from distractions that could derail their potential. Through technology and collaboration, these young change-makers in Denver are making a difference in their community and beyond.
