The owners of the Ash House in Boulder have committed to addressing safety violations and code issues that forced 60 students out of the building. The City of Boulder secured an agreement with the property owners to address the current life-safety issues and building code violations within two weeks. The court allowed students to return to the building while the owners fix the problems, which included issues with the fire alarm system and uninspected electrical and mechanical work.
The City of Boulder shut down the off-campus student housing building on University Hill due to safety violations, including the creation of additional bedrooms without permits or inspections. The property owners expressed surprise at the city’s actions and claimed they were deprived of due process. Director Brad Mueller emphasized the importance of safety and the need for swift action to address the violations.
A Boulder County District Court judge ruled that residents can stay in the building while the property owners address the violations. The city is committed to working with the owners to ensure the safety of the students living there. The next court hearing is scheduled for October 8. CU Boulder’s Division of Student Affairs is providing support to the affected students through Off-Campus Housing and Neighborhood Relations. Denver7 is highlighting the community’s efforts to make a difference, including addressing issues like those at the Ash House.
