Man from New York passes away during hike in the mountains of southwestern Colorado

An experienced climber from New York state tragically died in Colorado after falling several hundred feet while hiking in the mountains. The incident occurred on a 14er near Telluride, where the victim, a 53-year-old man from Rochester, was hiking alone on the Rock of Ages trail on Wilson Peak. This challenging trail has an elevation of 14,023 feet and is located about 15 miles southwest of Telluride.

The man suffered a fatal head injury after falling between 300 and 400 feet, and despite the efforts of San Miguel County Search and Rescue, he was declared dead upon their arrival. A helicopter was used to recover his body from the mountain. The San Miguel County Sheriff’s Office extended their deepest sympathies to the victim’s family in a social media post.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the dangers associated with high-altitude mountain climbing, even for experienced individuals. The victim’s identity has not been released to the public, but the circumstances surrounding his fall shed light on the risks that outdoor adventurers face while exploring the beautiful yet treacherous terrain of Colorado’s mountains. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased climber during this difficult time.
