Starting in early October, the Colorado Department of Transportation will begin rock scaling and blasting on Interstate 70 between the bottom of Floyd Hill at U.S. Highway 6 and Idaho Springs. This work is part of the Floyd Hill reconstruction project, which aims to replace bridges and realign the highway for improved safety and sightlines.
Drivers should expect traffic holds every 60-70 minutes, six times a day, Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. during off-peak travel times for rock scaling. Blasting will occur once per day and up to three times per week, with traffic stops expected to last for up to 20 minutes.
There is no detour available, so drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and allow for extra travel time. To stay updated on the project, drivers can sign up for CDOT text alerts by texting ‘floydhill’ to 21000.
CDOT recommends planning trips around the scaling and blasting schedules to avoid delays. They also offer resources such as the COtrip app for real-time traffic information and alerts.
For more information and updates on the project, drivers can contact the project information line at 720-994-2368, email cdot_floydhillproject@state.co.us, or visit the project website at codot.gov/projects/i70floydhill.
As construction work zones can be dangerous, drivers are reminded to obey speed limits, stay alert, watch for workers, avoid distractions like phones, and be patient. By following these guidelines and staying informed, travelers can navigate the I-70 construction project safely and efficiently.
