Infowars, owned by Alex Jones, will be sold off this fall to help pay the $1 billion he owes to the families of the Sandy Hook shooting victims. The parent company, Free Speech Systems, will be transferred to a trustee overseeing Jones’s bankruptcy case and then auctioned off. This comes after Jones was sued for defamation in 2022 for calling the shooting a hoax, resulting in immediate bankruptcy filings. Victims’ families reported harassment and threats from Jones’s supporters following his comments. Judge Lopez ordered the liquidation of Jones’s assets, excluding his main home and some exempt property, with auctions set for November. The sale will include Infowars’ trademarks, copyrighted material, social media accounts, and websites, but not Jones’s personal social media profiles. Lawyer Christopher Mattei, representing the Sandy Hook families, sees this as a step towards holding Jones accountable for the harm caused. Jones has promised to continue creating content even after losing control of the company, suggesting that his assets could be bought by his supporters. The effects of this sale will mark the end of a two-year legal battle and financial struggle for Jones and his controversial media platform.
