Family and friends are seeking the public’s help in finding University of Texas doctoral student Frank Guzman and his wife Caroline Katba, who have been missing since late July while traveling in Mexico. The couple was on a road trip to Chile for Frank’s research when they went offline on WhatsApp on July 22, alarming their families. Despite multiple attempts to reach them, they have not been located.
Guzman’s sister, Liz Guzman, has filed missing person reports in both Mexico and Texas, and reached out to the U.S. Embassy and FBI for assistance. A security team hired by UT believes the couple was last seen in Coatzacoalcos, Mexico, with no record of them leaving the country as planned on July 22. Guzman emphasized that her brother wouldn’t abandon his doctoral studies after 12 years of effort.
Frank Guzman is an anthropology student at UT with previous education at Penn State and Stanford, while Katba is working on starting a business. UT spokesperson Mike Rosen explained that, due to privacy laws, the university can’t confirm if someone is missing, but they would provide support in such cases. Guzman is appealing to anyone with knowledge of the couple’s whereabouts to contact the family, as they were not the type to vanish suddenly.
