Walter “Buz” Koelbel, Jr., the local developer and former president of Koelbel and Co., passed away on Sept. 19 at the age of 72 after battling blood cancer. Known for his significant contributions to real estate development in Colorado, Koelbel oversaw numerous projects along the Front Range, including the Catalyst HTI healthcare incubator and Centennial Promenade. He also worked on residential communities such as The Preserve and Pinehurst Country Club.
Described as having a long-term vision in his work, Koelbel was recognized for his innovative landscape design concepts and commitment to affordable housing projects. He was praised by colleagues for his attention to detail and tenacity in pursuing success in the industry. Koelbel’s legacy extends beyond his professional achievements, as he was also a philanthropic individual who supported various organizations in Colorado.
His passing has left a significant impact on the community, with a memorial service scheduled for Oct. 1 at Bethany Lutheran Church. Koelbel is survived by his wife, children, siblings, and grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to Junior Achievement or the High Line Canal Conservancy. Koelbel’s dedication to his work, family, and community will be remembered by all who knew him.
