Voter registration is at an all-time high as Election Day approaches, particularly among young people who are voting for the first time. On National Voter Registration Day, over 150,000 people registered through Vote.org, and pop star Taylor Swift’s Instagram post directing people to their state’s voter registration site resulted in over 400,000 visits. While Swift declared her party preference, voter registration does not require a party affiliation. The majority of new registrants are young people, with voters under 35 making up 81% of registrations. Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren has pushed for voter registration information to be offered to those applying for health insurance through HealthCare.Gov. Some, like Ezra Gershanok of Ohana, are finding creative ways to register young voters, such as distributing flyers with election-related jokes and QR codes to voter registration sites. Gershanok hopes to register 10,000 young people by Election Day by leveraging his company’s demographic of young professionals. Voter registration sites such as Vote.gov and vote.org, as well as state and local election offices, offer resources for those looking to register to vote.
