Former NFL wide receiver Terance Mathis has taken on the role of head coach at Morehouse College in Atlanta, a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) known for its academic excellence. Despite the school’s prestigious reputation, its football program has struggled in recent years.
Mathis, who played eight seasons with the Atlanta Falcons, aims to turn things around for the football team at Morehouse. He brings a positive and uplifting energy to the program, instilling belief and inspiration in the players. Senior linebacker Caleb Grant has praised Mathis for his leadership and experience playing at the highest level.
Playing football at Morehouse holds a special significance for the players, as the campus is steeped in Black history and surrounded by legacies of excellence. Mathis has expressed a desire to eventually move the program to the Division I FCS level, but for now, his focus is on improving the team’s performance in Division II.
With the challenges of NIL deals and transfer portals in the world of college athletics, Mathis is determined to create a winning culture at Morehouse. The potential move to the Division I level and possibly joining a conference like the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference is on the horizon, but for now, Mathis’s priority is to see the team succeed and thrive in their current division.
