DPS teachers stage walkout to demand the pay they claim is owed by the district

Teachers at Abraham Lincoln High School in Denver took to the streets to protest what they claim is a breach of contract by Denver Public Schools (DPS). The Denver Classroom Teachers Association (DCTA) alleges that DPS is not honoring a cost of living increase agreed upon in 2022. While the district claims that teachers have received a 5.2% cost of living adjustment over the past two years, teachers are only receiving a 2.06% increase this year due to funding shortfall. Teachers, including Dez Baldonado, a veteran educator, argue that they are being shortchanged and struggling to make ends meet in a high inflation environment. Union representative Ashley Nesladek highlighted the difficult choice teachers face between their love for teaching and financial security. The district maintains that it is bound by state funding requirements and will uphold the collective bargaining agreement. The teachers are calling for DPS Superintendent Alex Marrero to honor the contract and provide the full cost of living adjustment promised to them. The protest reflects the ongoing struggle for fair compensation and recognition of educators’ dedication to their profession.

In a message of community engagement and support, Denver7 showcased the teachers’ activism as part of their commitment to advocating for justice and making a difference in the local community.
