Dodgers defeat Rockies as Shohei Ohtani breaks MLB record

Shohei Ohtani made history on Friday night, setting a major league record by homering and stealing a base for the 14th time in the same game as the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied to beat the Colorado Rockies 6-4. Ohtani’s performance helped the Dodgers reduce their magic number to four to clinch the NL West division title. This win also secured a postseason berth for the team.

Ohtani’s 52nd homer and 52nd stolen base in the same game broke the previous record set by Rickey Henderson in 1986. Teoscar Hernández hit a go-ahead homer in the sixth inning to give the Dodgers a 4-3 lead, and the team added two more runs in the seventh.

The crowd of 49,073 at Dodger Stadium witnessed Ohtani’s impressive display after he made history the night before by becoming the first player with 50 homers and 50 stolen bases in a season. The Rockies got home runs from Charlie Blackmon and Sam Hilliard in the game.

The victory was credited to Alex Vesia, who pitched one inning of relief, while Michael Kopech notched his 14th save. Colorado’s Kyle Freeland took the loss after giving up four runs in six innings.

In terms of injuries, Rockies’ Tyler Kinley went on the IL with right elbow inflammation, while Dodgers’ Clayton Kershaw and Anthony Banda made progress in their recovery.

The next game will feature RHP Cal Quantrill for the Rockies and RHP Walker Buehler for the Dodgers, as both teams continue their push towards the end of the regular season. Fans can sign up for the Rockies Insider for more MLB news and analysis.
