Katie, who was 29 years old, had been rescued from the illegal pet trade in 1996 and had been a popular attraction at the zoo, often greeting visitors with a friendly demeanor. After monitoring her health closely and conducting diagnostic testing, the zoo made the decision to humanely euthanize her on September 11 to prevent further suffering.
In a heartfelt post on Facebook, the zoo shared that Katie had a special place in the hearts of her caretakers and visitors alike. The Primate Team described her as a friendly and special monkey who had a way of making others feel special too. Katie was known for her interactions with visitors, especially children, and her fascination with mirrors and paper enrichment activities. Her caretakers, Bailey W. and Courtney M., expressed their deep sadness at the loss of Katie, who had been a beloved member of the troop.
