In a recent online news conference, U.S. Rep. Yadira Caraveo criticized her Republican opponent, Gabe Evans, for not adequately denouncing antisemitic and violent social media posts made by his former political director, Jessica Spindle. Caraveo emphasized that hate and antisemitism have no place in society and called for standing up against all forms of intolerance.
Evans responded by condemning Spindle’s posts and stating that he acted immediately upon learning about them. Spindle’s posts included antisemitic content, as well as promotion of political violence, QAnon, and support for controversial flags. She was fired after her posts were brought to the campaign’s attention.
Illinois Congressman Brad Schneider, who is Jewish, joined Caraveo in criticizing Evans, accusing him of not standing with the Jewish people against hate. Evans attempted to shift the focus to Caraveo, citing her vote against a bill providing funding to Israel in its fight against Hamas. Caraveo explained her vote by stating opposition to how the bill was funded.
The 8th Congressional District race between Caraveo and Evans is expected to be highly competitive, as the district is evenly divided by voter affiliation. It covers northern Denver suburbs and extends north to Greeley and a portion of Larimer County. The controversy over Spindle’s posts and the candidates’ responses adds a new dimension to the race as the election approaches.
