Tuesday is National Voter Registration Day, with more than 100 celebrities helping to encourage their social media followers to check their voter registration status. Celebrities such as Olivia Rodrigo, Steph Curry, and Kerry Washington are using their Linktree link-in-bio to redirect users to a website that helps them learn about their local voter registration status as part of a partnership between nonpartisan Vote.org and Linktree.
Previous celebrity initiatives have successfully motivated people to register to vote, with Taylor Swift’s post in 2023 prompting 35,000 voter registrations. Mobilizing young voters could be crucial to the outcome of the 2024 election, and many young voters spend a lot of time on TikTok, a popular platform for Linktree.
The group participating in the voter registration initiative has more than a billion followers collectively, according to Linktree. Kerry Washington and Steph Curry, who have already been involved in election work, continue to encourage people to vote after their DNC appearances. Viral gold medalists Tara Davis-Woodhall and Hunter Woodhall are also using their social media following to encourage voter participation.
In 2020, 48% of eligible voters between 18 to 29 turned out to vote, showing an increase from 2016. Experts believe that young voters could sway the 2024 election, and efforts like the partnership between Linktree and Vote.org aim to keep up the momentum in voter registration among younger demographics. Voters can check their registration status at Vote.org.
