Green groups relieved as von der Leyen’s climate choices create ‘Dream Team’

Climate activists and the renewable energy lobby are cautiously optimistic about Ursula von der Leyen’s new picks for her commissioner positions in her second term. The re-appointment of Wopke Hoekstra as EU climate commissioner, along with Dan Jørgensen handling the energy portfolio and Teresa Ribera in charge of a clean transition, signals continuity with the Green Deal from her first term. This “dream team” is expected to navigate geopolitical tensions, reduce LNG imports, and push for renewable energy.

The inclusion of taxation in Hoekstra’s portfolio has raised hopes for initiatives that reflect the polluter pays principle, while Jørgensen’s dual role as energy and housing commissioner is seen as a logical move to tackle fossil fuel consumption in buildings. SolarPower Europe CEO Walburga Hemetsberger believes that Jørgensen’s role will help decarbonize the grid and ensure everyone benefits from renewable energy.

However, some groups remain skeptical about the new commission’s intentions, with concerns about lowering social and environmental standards. The acid test of the new executive’s commitment to climate action will come when Hoekstra proposes a 2040 emissions reduction target next year. Despite some skepticism, von der Leyen’s picks are generally viewed as a positive step towards continuing her climate-focused policies.
