The aftermath of Typhoon Yagi has devastated Myanmar, with at least 236 confirmed dead and 77 more missing. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs believes the death toll could be even higher, with an estimated 631,000 people affected by the floods. The storm, one of the strongest this year, swept through southern China, Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar, causing widespread destruction.
The flooding has affected nine regions and states in Myanmar, including the capital Naypyidaw and Mandalay region, exacerbating the country’s existing crisis following the February 2021 coup. Thousands have been displaced due to the conflict between the military and opposing forces, further complicating relief efforts.
Despite previous reluctance, the military has now issued a rare call for outside assistance, acknowledging the urgent need for food, water, medicine, clothes, and shelter. However, damaged infrastructure and limited communication services are hindering relief operations.
The humanitarian response is also hindered by severe underfunding, with only 25% of this year’s Myanmar response currently funded. Urgent international aid is required to address the growing humanitarian crisis in Myanmar following the devastation caused by Typhoon Yagi.
