The Regional Transportation District (RTD) has begun maintenance work at a light rail crossing on Kalamath Street in Denver, resulting in a six-day closure and detours for drivers. The work involves stabilizing the rail base and repairing the asphalt along the alignment. Drivers traveling south on Champa Street to West Colfax Avenue will be detoured to Speer Boulevard until the work is completed.
The maintenance work on Kalamath Street comes after RTD recently completed its Downtown Rail Reconstruction Project, which replaced 30-year-old tracks across five intersections in downtown Denver. Stuart Summers, RTD’s Chief Communications and Engagement Officer, expressed excitement about completing the project ahead of schedule.
In addition to the maintenance work on Kalamath Street, RTD will be testing the L line to ensure it is operating safely after improvements. During testing, light rails will operate in both directions along Welton Street, with single-lane closures in both directions on Park Avenue. The work is expected to be completed before RTD’s upcoming service changes, which will include the resumption of light rail service in the downtown loop and changes to D and H line trains.
The temporary road closures and detours are necessary to ensure the safety and efficiency of Denver’s light rail system, and RTD is working diligently to minimize disruptions for commuters while completing necessary maintenance and testing.
