Former President Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt while playing golf in Florida, two months after another attempt on his life at a rally in Pennsylvania. The suspect, identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, was arrested after Secret Service agents fired at him while he was pointing an AK-style rifle with a scope at Trump. Routh, who lived in North Carolina before moving to Hawaii, had expressed support for Ukraine and made political donations to both Democratic and Republican candidates.
The shooter was hiding in shrubbery about 400-500 yards away from Trump, who was playing at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach. Trump confirmed his safety in an email to supporters, and thanked law enforcement for keeping him safe. Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump’s opponent in the presidential election, also expressed relief that he was unharmed.
Trump is set to speak live from Mar-a-Lago resort to launch his sons’ crypto platform, and a congressional bipartisan task force has requested a briefing by the Secret Service regarding the incident. Rep. Mike Kelly and Rep. Jason Crow condemned political violence and said they will share updates as more information becomes available. Rep. Jared Moskowitz, a Florida Democrat, stated that he will seek answers about the assassination attempt.
