The death toll in central Europe has risen due to severe flooding, with six people dead in Romania, one in Austria, and one in Poland. Additionally, four people are missing in the Czech Republic. Extreme weather events have also been reported in other parts of the world, including western and central Africa, Southeast Asia, and Myanmar. While these events cannot definitively be attributed to climate change, it is well established that human-caused climate breakdown is leading to more frequent and intense extreme weather events globally. Warmer air can hold more water vapor, leading to more severe rainfall and flooding. Flooding in central Europe has led to the closure of factories and stores, while government officials in affected countries have deployed armed forces to assist with relief efforts. In Hungary, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán postponed his international obligations due to the floods. The Czech Prime Minister has urged residents to follow instructions from emergency services, while the Austrian Chancellor stated that 2,400 soldiers are on standby to assist with relief efforts. In light of the ongoing extreme weather events, it is important for countries to continue to prioritize climate change mitigation efforts to prevent further disasters.
