Ohio Sen. JD Vance appeared on NBC’s “Meet the Press” to downplay far-right political activist Laura Loomer’s racist comments about Vice President Kamala Harris’ Indian American heritage, stating that the focus should be on policies and issues rather than Loomer’s remarks. Loomer had made derogatory comments about Harris, suggesting that if she won the election, the White House would smell like curry. Vance, who had previously spread rumors about Haitian immigrants eating pets, tried to minimize Loomer’s comments and denied her affiliation with the Trump campaign. He stated that Loomer’s comments were a distraction from Harris’ policies and that they should instead focus on her presidential campaign. Vance, who is married to an Indian American woman, mentioned his wife’s heritage but did not directly address whether they were offended by Loomer’s remarks. Trump, who had a relationship with Loomer, has also distanced himself from her after receiving backlash from other conservatives. Loomer, known for spreading conspiracies like the idea that 9/11 was an “inside job,” accompanied Trump to the 9/11 memorial ceremony at Ground Zero. Both Vance and Trump have avoided directly addressing Loomer’s comments, choosing instead to focus on broader issues and policies.
