In the first face-to-face meeting between Democratic nominee Kamala Harris and Republican rival Donald Trump during Tuesday’s presidential debate in Philadelphia, various accusations were exchanged. Fact-checking found that Harris did meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu despite missing a scheduled speech. Trump falsely claimed that the US left $85 billion worth of military equipment in Afghanistan when the number was much lower. Additionally, claims of Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio eating pets were found to be false. Harris’ assertion that Trump’s policies would create a $4,000 sales tax impact on middle-class families was found to be partly true with varying estimates. Harris’ claim that Trump left the worst unemployment since the Great Depression was false, as the unemployment rate had dropped by the end of 2020. Trump’s accusation of job creation numbers being a “fraud” was debunked by economists. Trump also falsely claimed that Democrats support “execution after birth” for newborns. Finally, Harris was falsely accused of trying to negotiate a deal between Putin and Ukraine before the war started. Additionally, Trump’s denial of climate change was proven false as he has stated it is a hoax in the past despite overwhelming scientific evidence to the contrary.
