Michael Blunck completed an impressive 235-mile journey from Craig Hospital in Englewood to Crested Butte on his Townie bike named “Dragon Wagon” over the course of nine days. The cycling enthusiast was greeted by dozens of friends at the finish line on Sunday, just in time for the 20th annual Bridges of the Butte Townie Tour. During his ride, Blunck faced challenging ascents and descents, with one particularly challenging section near Deckers along the South Platte River.
Blunck’s ride was done to raise money for the Adaptive Sports Center of Crested Butte, supporting individuals with life-altering injuries or diagnoses. His goal was to raise $100,000, and he has already raised an impressive $67,663, marking a substantial contribution. Blunck, a seasoned rider, has participated in the Bridges of the Butte Townie Tour for 15 years and decided to embark on this long journey as a culmination of his fundraising efforts.
The highlight of his ride was summiting Cottonwood Pass at 12,126 feet in elevation, where he experienced emotional moments reflecting on his journey and the support he received from adaptive participants. Blunck’s inspiration to raise money comes from a friend’s son with cerebral palsy, whose lack of programs for adaptive sports motivated him to support the Adaptive Sports Center.
Those interested in supporting the Adaptive Sports Center of Crested Butte can make a donation to continue providing opportunities for individuals with disabilities to enjoy adaptive recreation programs. Blunck’s dedication and determination highlight the power of community support and the importance of inclusive recreational opportunities for all.
