Supporters of Kilyn Lewis, an unarmed Black man shot and killed by Aurora police in May, gathered outside the Aurora Municipal Building to express concerns about the investigation into his death. It has been 109 days since the incident, and the family has not received many updates. Organizer Auontai Anderson criticized the lack of accountability and justice in the case.
Lewis was killed by a SWAT officer when he pulled out a cell phone during an arrest attempt. The family is considering pursuing legal action, but details are being kept private to protect their pursuit. Attendees also raised concerns about racism against Venezuelan immigrants in Aurora, particularly amid attention on the Tren de Aragua gang. Natasha Barshalom highlighted the struggles faced by many Venezuelan immigrants who are not involved in criminal activities.
The rally attendees also spoke out during the Aurora City Council meeting, demanding justice for Lewis and calling for transparency in the investigation. The community is determined to seek accountability and address issues of racism and injustice. The event was a platform for people to come together and show solidarity with the family of Kilyn Lewis as they continue their fight for justice.
