Schools and districts in Colorado saw higher performance ratings last academic year, according to preliminary data released by the state. Colorado Education Commissioner Susana Córdova praised the progress made, attributing it to the dedication of students, staff, and communities. The ratings, part of the state’s accountability system, showed that the majority of school districts earned a rating of “improvement” or higher, with only 17 districts receiving the highest rating of “distinction.”
The number of schools and districts on the accountability clock decreased compared to the previous year, with only 11 districts and 190 schools identified. Adams 14 improved from a turnaround rating to priority improvement and is now rated improvement. However, there are still challenges to address, as state testing data revealed that the majority of students in Colorado are not meeting academic expectations.
Cody Ostenson, of Denver Families for Public Schools, highlighted widening equity gaps for Black and Latino students in reading and math. He emphasized the importance of replicating the conditions of schools that are excelling in serving these student populations throughout Denver Public Schools. The final ratings are expected to be released in December after schools and districts have the opportunity to request changes. These results come after a pause in ratings due to the pandemic and provide insight into the progress and challenges faced by Colorado’s education system.
